The story
On Isle de France in 1759, Massamba and his daughter Mati live in fear and hardship as enslaved people on Eugène Larcenet’s plantation. Massamba longs for Mati to be free, while she dreams of leaving. When Mati escapes, Larcenet relies on Madame La Victoire, who is paid by the King to hunt down runaway slaves, to bring her back.

Isle de France, 1759. Two enslaved people, Massamba and his daughter Mati, work in fear and hardship on the plantation owned by Eugène Larcenet. Massamba wants only one thing: for his daughter to be set free. Mati has a wild idea: to leave this hell. One night, she escapes. Eugène Larcenet relies on Madame La Victoire, who is paid by the King to hunt down runaway slaves, to bring her back. Massamba flees in turn, becoming a “maroon,” an escaped slave living beyond the reach of the plantation.
