Full plot (contains spoilers)
The day gets off to a bad start for Paul Schneider, a conscientious insurance clerk. His car still hasn’t been repaired, the ticket machine at the S-Bahn station is out of order, and a street musician on the train is getting on his nerves with his music. Before long, he is caught riding without a ticket. When he arrives at the bank, his sleazy colleague Ingo is making fun of him again. The only colleague he gets along with particularly well is Luisa, who is new. Paul makes a real effort to deal with his customers’ problems, while Ingo takes it easy and would rather flirt with his female colleagues and customers. When the young customer Kevin turns out to be a “welfare scrounger,” provokes Paul, and lays hands on him, Paul has to push him away. Ingo sees a chance to capitalize on the incident. Paul receives a formal warning and is told to apologize to Kevin for the sake of the company’s image. On top of that, Paul learns that the car repairs will cost considerably more than expected and that his bank won’t give him a loan—the very bank that once swindled him with a “super-savings fund.” Paul has to change something; he wants to stand up to injustice. He turns to Aylin, a young lawyer, for support. But the meeting to apologize to Kevin and his parents goes completely wrong, and the insurance company’s internal hearing results in Paul’s dismissal for image reasons. Once again, Paul sees the company’s double standards: it profits from ordinary people’s money, while solidarity is treated as a sign of weakness. Paul refuses to hold back from saying so. Later, when Paul runs into Kevin, the two of them end up at the police station. There they meet Jost, the bank employee who refused Paul’s loan. Jost punched his boss in the face after being fired for having qualms about his bank’s shady dealings. Jost has information that an upcoming charity event is to be used to funnel donations around tax obligations, though he can’t prove it. A plan begins to take shape among those involved—Paul, Jost, Aylin, and Kevin—to use the charity event to make themselves heard. With help from Paul’s neighbor Timur, and thanks to Kevin’s chance acquaintance with a bouncer, the four manage to sneak into the event venue. Ingo is there with Luisa, currying favor with the bosses. Paul and the others take the stage and denounce the companies’ behavior. They are led away, while Ingo cheers. The next day, it emerges that the public prosecutor’s office has become involved. Criminal investigations for tax evasion were already underway, but after the previous day’s stunt, civil claims from the donors are likely to follow as well. The donors are already standing outside the law firm’s door. Everyone involved decides to work together to help the new clients. The insurance company’s boss resigns, and restructuring is in the works. Ingo is convinced that he will finally climb the career ladder, but to his surprise, he learns that Luisa is his new boss and that he will remain in his current position. Paul, meanwhile, runs into the ticket inspector on the S-Bahn, and something seems to be developing between them.
