A young woman arrives in Obaba with a video camera, hoping to capture its present-day reality, but finds a community bound to its past.
The story
Twenty-three-year-old Lourdes travels to Obaba carrying a small video camera, intending to capture the place, its people, and the present as they are. Instead, she discovers a community unlike the one she imagined. Residents including Merche, Ismael, and Tomás seem anchored in a past they cannot—or do not want to—leave behind. As Lourdes befriends Miguel, a cheerful, easygoing young man, she begins learning fragments of the residents’ lives, moving between memories of their earlier years and the concerns and hopes some still hold in the present.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Lourdes, only 23 years old, sets off on a journey to the lands of Obaba. In her luggage she carries a small video camera. With it, she wants to capture the reality of Obaba, its world and its people. She wants to capture the present and show it as it is. But Obaba is not the place Lourdes imagined, and she soon discovers that those who live there, like Merche, Ismael, and Tomás, are anchored in a past they cannot—or do not want to—escape. Through them and Miguel—a cheerful, easygoing young man with whom she becomes friends—Lourdes learns fragments of their lives: of the past, when they were children or adults, and of the present, when some of them still hold on to their hopes.
