Full plot (contains spoilers)

Miguel Ángel Poblete is a fourteen-year-old orphan who lives in the church in Villa Alemana. In 1983, during the military dictatorship, he begins having supposed visions of the Virgin Mary, attracting thousands of followers. When his experiences make national news, the Church investigates the case and concludes that it is all a maneuver by the dictatorship to distract attention from the first protests against Augusto Pinochet. For this reason, the bishop of Valparaíso forbids the Virgin from being worshipped through the boy, deeming it false and inappropriate. Eventually, Miguel Ángel loses his credibility, followers, and grasp on reason. In the film’s epilogue, it is explained that, after fading from public attention, Miguel Ángel changed sex, became the leader of a religious sect, and eventually died in 2008.
