There he meets Francesca, also hospitalized against her will, whose young son Antonio has been taken away from her. After leaving the hospital, the two decide to travel to Cagliari and look for the boy, who is staying at a facility. Full plot (contains spoilers)
Alessandro is an outcast in his fifties with no steady job. From time to time, he performs as a singer of Sassarese folk music. He still lives with his mother and, when he is not performing at a music gig with his friend Gavinuccio, spends his time drinking alcohol and playing video poker. One evening, after leaving a nightclub, he wrecks his mother’s house because she had refused to give him money, and is forcibly admitted to the psychiatric ward of a hospital. There he meets Francesca, who has also been involuntarily hospitalized and whose young son Antonio had been taken away from her. The two spend a night together. After leaving the clinic, they decide to go looking for the boy, who is temporarily staying at a facility in Cagliari. When they arrive, the facility’s director, unable to contravene the restraining order issued by the court against Francesca, refuses to let the mother see her child. Indignant, Alessandro insults the director. Meanwhile, when the boy saw his mother arrive, he had secretly hidden in the car driven by Alessandro and Francesca, unbeknownst to anyone. When the two discover him, they decide to take him away with them. Francesca has already bought ferry tickets to Barcelona and invites Alessandro to go with them. But when the three arrive at the boarding area in Porto Torres, they find a police checkpoint waiting for them. Alessandro then decides to sacrifice himself by attacking the officers, diverting their attention from Francesca so she can board undisturbed.
