A self-effacing mother in Naples gets a chance to change her life when she begins working on a local television drama.
The story
In Naples, Anna Ruotolo lives a dull, self-effacing life, a contrast to the outgoing and courageous child she once was. Her family is troubled: she has three teenage children, one of whom is deaf, and an abusive husband, Luigi, who is involved in loan-sharking. Anna would dearly like to make him leave their home, but she is accustomed to helping others and feels like a puppet in her own life. A new job as a prompter on a local television drama offers a possible turning point. The show stars the vain Michele Migliaccio, whose charms immediately attract her, as Anna begins to imagine a way beyond her routine.

Naples. Anna Ruotolo is a slacker: as a child she was outgoing and courageous, but she is no longer like that. She leads a dull life, and only sometimes does it become “colorful,” such as when she steps out onto the terrace of her home overlooking the sea. She also has a troubled family: she has three teenage children, one of whom is deaf, while her abusive husband, Luigi, whom she would dearly like to throw out of the house, is caught up in loan-sharking. Her chance at redemption comes when Anna starts working as a prompter on a local TV drama, starring the vain Michele Migliaccio, whose charms she falls for immediately. Her dull life as a puppet, always far too willing to help others, is about to come to an end.
