The story

Michel de Assantes, a disillusioned French plastic surgeon troubled by impotence, abandons a plan to kill himself and takes a pilgrim’s bicycle toward Timbuktu, which he imagines may hold the secret to happiness. An accident near Calabuch, a small Levantine coastal town as chaotic as the life he hoped to leave behind, interrupts his journey. There he meets the sensual, impetuous Trini and the mystical visionary Encarna. The sisters symbolically baptize him, take him into their home, and try to help him overcome what is described as his supposed impotence.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Michel de Assantes (Michel Piccoli) is a prestigious French plastic surgeon who, disenchanted with life and struggling with serious impotence problems, decides to kill himself by jumping out of the window of his office in Paris. But at the last moment he changes his mind and chooses instead to get on the bicycle of a pilgrim (Antonio Resines) and travel to Timbuktu, whose exotic name seems to conceal the secret of happiness. His journey is interrupted when he has an accident near Calabuch, a small town on the Levantine coast that strikes him as just as chaotic as the existence he had intended to leave behind. There he encounters a collection of very different characters, among them the sensual, impetuous Trini (Concha Velasco) and the mystical visionary Encarna (Amparo Soler Leal), two sisters who symbolically baptize him and put him up in their home, trying to help him overcome his supposed impotence. As the millennium is about to turn, Michel experiences a series of delirious situations alongside the inhabitants of this distinctive Mediterranean town: Gaby (Javier Gurruchaga), the vice-ridden brother of Trini and Encarna; an anarchic nudist (Juan Diego); a priest convicted of murder (Santiago Segura); disobedient immigrants; and corrupt politicians and businessmen.
