A Parisian physician turns to unconventional advice to try to revive his sexually and emotionally strained marriage.

The story

After seven years of marriage, Paris emergency physician Alain seeks help from a sex-therapist friend to save a relationship that has grown distant both sexually and emotionally. The friend’s pseudo-Freudian ideas lead him to recommend that Alain and his wife, Audrey, act on repressed fantasies and embrace sexual freedom. Audrey, a bank employee, has grown cold and no longer loves her husband; she remains in their marriage out of habit and to raise their daughter, Camille. Alain must now try to address their estrangement through his friend’s unconventional advice.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Trying to save his marriage, which has been deteriorating both sexually and emotionally after seven years, Alain, an emergency physician at a Paris clinic, consults a friend who is a sex therapist. Through grand pseudo-Freudian theories about point D (the point of Desire, which must not become the point of Depression), his friend persuades him that the only solution lies in acting out repressed fantasies and embracing sexual freedom (sex shops, swinging, porn films...) and advises him to put his fantasies into practice with his wife, Audrey. A bank employee, Audrey has grown cold and has completely stopped loving her husband, maintaining their married life only out of habit built up over the years and for the sake of raising their daughter, Camille. Alain and Audrey discover the world of sex shops, voyeurism, and swinging, but gradually realize that this world is not for them.
