Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film unfolds through two parallel stories set in different eras: the story of Juan Preciado, who travels to Comala in search of his father, Pedro Páramo, at his mother’s request, made just before she died, to demand what was rightfully his; and the story of Pedro Páramo, who, after his father’s death, married Dolores (Juan Preciado’s mother) for convenience, and the course of his life until his death. Juan Preciado is at his mother’s deathbed when she tells him to go to Comala in search of his father, so that he can give them what he never gave them and what had always been rightfully theirs. After his mother dies, Juan sets off for Comala. His mother had always described Comala as a beautiful town, but as he draws near, all he sees is a deserted, lifeless place. On the way, he meets a farmer named Abundio Martínez, who takes him to the inn run by Eduviges Dyada, who has been expecting him. As they talk, Eduviges tells him that the Abundio he met cannot be the same one she knew, since Abundio had been dead for a long time.
