The story

Pierre Chavanges manages about thirty dairy cows alone on the farm he took over from his parents. When his cow Topaze begins behaving abnormally, he asks his sister Pascale, a veterinarian, for her opinion. Pierre fears Topaze may have a fictional disease called FHD, and the diagnosis is clear-cut. He knows that if one cow is affected, the health authorities will slaughter the entire herd as a precaution. Pierre therefore decides to hide the truth from his parents, neighbors, and friends, even as the situation worsens.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Pierre Chavanges (Swann Arlaud) is a farmer who single-handedly manages a herd of around thirty dairy cows on the farm he took over from his parents. He asks his sister Pascale (Sara Giraudeau), a veterinarian, for her opinion on the health of his cow Topaze, because she seems to be behaving abnormally and he fears she may be suffering from FHD (dorsal hemorrhagic fever, a fictional disease invented for the film). The diagnosis is clear-cut. Pierre knows that if one cow is affected, the health authorities will slaughter the entire herd in accordance with the precautionary principle. So he decides to do everything he can to hide the truth from everyone: his parents, neighbors, and friends. But things get worse.
