The story
Nicolas lives on a farm with his parents and grandparents. A livestock farmer facing debt, he also faces a case of mad cow disease that means the herd must be slaughtered.

Nicolas lives on a farm with his parents and grandparents. Because of his debt as a livestock farmer, a case of mad cow disease, and the slaughter of the herd that must follow, his father kills himself. With his grandparents moved into a nursing home, Nicolas tries to get by; then he decides to settle with his sister and grandparents in the old, abandoned farmhouse on the Causse, where Maria lives with her children. Maria is a widowed singer with whom he has fallen in love.
