Ellena takes the old threat lightly as she spends her birthday among the court alchemist Archivald and her friend Amélie. Her father and Archivald believe the curse can be undone only by a kiss of true love, so they invite Prince Jan, a childhood friend, to try. Ellena spends the day carefree, leading up to an evening feast held in her honor.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film takes place in a fictional world called Oberon, specifically in the peaceful kingdom of Aspánia. Years ago, Aspánia was engulfed by the dreaded Black Storm, a magical whirlwind that threatened to destroy the entire kingdom and all its inhabitants. To prevent this, King Robert VIII of Aspánia promised the cunning witch Murien that he would grant any wish in exchange for her calling off the storm. Murien called it off. The witch craved eternal life, which she could obtain with the voluntarily given soul of a child. The king could not bring himself to do such a thing and refused to hand over his daughter, Princess Ellena. Enraged by the king’s betrayal, Murien cursed little Ellena, declaring that on her twentieth birthday, at sunset, the kingdom would this time truly be destroyed by the terrifying Black Storm. The main story follows Princess Ellena on the day of her twentieth birthday. She is stubborn and conceited, and takes the threat of imminent destruction lightly; after all, few people are afraid of the old threat. During the day, she encounters a pair of clumsy guards, two witch hunters from distant lands, the court alchemist Archivald, and her best friend Amélie, who is training to be an alchemist and has only her final exam left. It is also revealed that King Robert and Archivald have discovered that only a kiss of true love can undo such a powerful curse. They have therefore invited Prince Jan from the neighboring kingdom of Calderon, with whom Ellena was very close as a child, to kiss her. The princess spends the whole day without a care, until the evening feast held in her honor. The threat of the Black Storm proves real, and although Jan kisses the princess, nothing happens—she does not love him. Darkness engulfs the kingdom. Ellena suddenly wakes up. At first she is confused, but after a while she realizes that the whole day is repeating itself, and that she is the only one who remembers. Archivald explains that when she was born, he enchanted her with a powerful Rune of Time, thanks to which she will repeat the same day over and over until she undoes the Black Storm. Time is thus her servant, not her master. At first Ellena takes advantage of this and carefree enjoys a life without consequences, but after the same day has repeated many times, she grows tired of everything. She therefore decides to break the curse and kindle love for Jan, but despite repeated attempts, she cannot manage it. Her last option is to kill Murien, who has settled in a nearby abandoned fortress. The fortress is protected by powerful magic, which can only be broken with the Locksmith’s Scroll. It can be obtained by correctly solving the riddles at the Mouth of Truth, the Ear of Secrets, and the Eyes of Light. Ellena therefore takes Prince Jan and Amélie with her to help. At the Ear of Secrets, viewers also learn that the princess is unsure of her feelings for Jan; she does not know whether she really loves him or not. After solving the riddles, they obtain the scroll and set off for the fortress, which they successfully enter. Murien is already waiting there by a stone altar, atop which a magical crystal in the shape of a silvery rose floats. The witch is truly powerful, and every attempt to kill her fails: Ellena always fails and wakes up on the same morning again. Eventually, however, she overhears the two guards reading about witch hunters. The crystal—the silver rose—is the source of Murien’s power, and Ellena plans a new attack. This one ends in complete disaster, because Ellena accidentally lets something slip, Murien discovers the Rune of Time and cancels its spell. The princess wakes up on the same morning once more, but this time for the last time—the time loop no longer exists. Ellena has changed since her first twentieth birthday: she is now kind and friendly, and is pleasant to everyone throughout the day. She decides to make one last attempt to kill Murien, but this time she tells the people and Archivald about it. While they are obtaining the scroll, it also becomes clear that she has indeed fallen in love with Jan, who is, after all, a handsome and devoted prince. They set off for the fortress one last time, break through its protective spell and enter, but this time they have reinforcements: the two guards, the witch hunters, Archivald, and several other townspeople. The battle is fierce, and Murien refuses to give in easily, until only Ellena and Jan remain. The witch casts a spell on Jan to turn him to stone, but the princess jumps in front of him, and the spell rebounds thanks to the power of love. Amélie draws her sword, destroys the rose, and Murien turns to dust. It seems the threat has been averted, but the Black Storm is still rushing toward the kingdom. Ellena and Jan share one last kiss goodbye, when suddenly the storm is gone. Love has triumphed once again. The princess and the prince marry, Amélie becomes an alchemist, King Robert renews his friendship with the king of Calderon, and the kingdom celebrates exuberantly.
