A prince falls for a young woman cursed to live as a swan by day and seeks to help her break the spell.
The story
Prince Friedrich is expected, at his mother Queen Luise’s request, to select princesses from photographs for an upcoming ball. His friends Benno and Toni persuade him to take a break and ride to Swan Lake, deep in the forest beyond the kingdom. There he sees a swan transform into a girl named Odette. She explains that the sorcerer Rotbart has cursed her: by day she must live as a swan, and only at night does she regain human form. The spell can be broken only by true love. Friedrich is captivated by Odette and wants to help, but Rotbart seeks to keep them apart.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Prince Friedrich is annoyed: At the behest of his mother, Queen Luise, he is supposed to choose from a pile of photographs the princesses who will be invited to a ball. His two friends, Benno and Toni, realize he needs a break and persuade him to go riding to Swan Lake, which lies in the forest of the sorcerer Rotbart, beyond the kingdom. By the time they arrive, evening is falling. While his two friends fall asleep by the campfire, Friedrich watches as the swan swimming on the lake when they arrived transforms into a girl. The girl is named Odette, and she has been cursed by the evil sorcerer: By day, she must live as a swan; only at night does she regain her human form. Only true love can break the spell. Prince Friedrich is captivated by the gentle girl and wants to help her. Odette has almost come to terms with her fate, but a tender love develops between them. He invites her to the ball, but Rotbart tries by every means to drive the young couple apart and prevent his curse from being broken.
