The story
Tõnu, a successful factory manager, leads a monotonous life, his refined manners setting him apart from colleagues and villagers alike. Returning to the city after his father’s funeral, he accidentally runs over a dog and discovers severed women’s hands in the forest while dealing with its body. When he reports the find, police suspect him and threaten to torture a confession from him. His situation changes when officers bring in Nadezhda, a Russian girl they have apparently sought for some time. She escapes, and Tõnu hides her in his car, drawing him into a chain of increasingly unsettling events.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film’s protagonist is a successful factory manager. The life around him is rather monotonous and quite unattractive, while his politeness and refined manners stand in contrast both to the villagers from the place where his late father came from and to his colleagues, all notorious alcoholics. Returning to the city from his father’s funeral, he accidentally runs over a dog. As he drags it into the forest, he finds severed women’s hands there. When Tõnu reports this to the police, the officers are ready to torture a confession out of him without a second thought, claiming that he was the one who killed them. Tõnu is saved when the police bring in a certain Russian girl for questioning, apparently someone they had been looking for for a long time. The girl escapes, and he hides her in his car. After a drunken party for the factory’s management, the owner decides to lay off the workers. The mysterious girl named Nadezhda turns out to be the daughter of one of those laid off. Tõnu, whose family life is gradually beginning to fall apart, becomes enamored of her, but she is abducted by a thug accompanied by a decadently dressed English-speaking man. The kidnappers lose a business card bearing the name of the “Golden Age” club. Tõnu goes to the club, where a strange and terrifying orgy is taking place. He sees Nadezhda on the stage as well. The patrons vote for one of the girls onstage, who apparently faces something terrible, since she is crying and resisting. Tõnu then finds himself locked in a cage. Before his eyes, the Englishman with the decadent appearance is killed, and then, on the club owner’s orders, Nadezhda kills herself by striking herself on the head with a brick. Tõnu loses consciousness. When he wakes, he finds himself on an operating table, with a maniac carrying a chainsaw approaching him, while his body has been marked out with a felt-tip pen into numbered pieces. Tõnu manages to escape. Freezing, he runs for a long time across a snowy plain. Whether in reality or in a death delirium, Tõnu sees himself sitting at a table and eating Nadezhda’s remains.
