The story
Antonio Martínez is an old-fashioned taxi driver in Madrid who proudly describes his children’s lives: Juan shares his trade, Luisa works as a hairdresser, Antoñito is studying law, and Paloma is expected to become a housewife. In reality, each has a different path or desire, including Paloma’s wish to marry a city police officer, Juan’s opportunistic behavior, Antonio’s ambition to become a bullfighter, and Luisa’s secret work as a go-go dancer. When Antonio learns the truth, he confronts his family, leaving them estranged and setting the family conflict in motion.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Antonio Martínez is an old-fashioned taxi driver who drives around Madrid and boasts about his children: Juan, who shares his job as a taxi driver; Luisa, a ladies’ hairdresser; Antoñito, who is studying to become a lawyer; and Paloma, who will be a housewife. But Antonio doesn’t know that his children aren’t exactly as he thinks: Paloma wants to marry a city police officer; Juan is a cheeky rogue who takes advantage of his mother; Antonio wants to be a bullfighter; and Luisa is a go-go dancer, something her parents don’t know. The day Antonio finds out, he confronts his wife and children and is deeply disappointed. From then on, no one in the family speaks to Antonio, and he thinks the best thing is to leave them so they can see for themselves that they have made a mistake. But that won’t work either, since each of them will see their problems get worse.
