The story
François Gauthier is an intensely stingy violinist who arranges his life to avoid spending money; saving makes him happy, while paying for anything upsets him. His routine changes when he meets a woman and falls in love with her, and also encounters Laura, her daughter, whose existence was previously unknown to him. To keep those around him from discovering his defining flaw, François begins lying, setting up complications as his attempts at concealment threaten to cost him dearly.

Incredibly stingy, François Gauthier, a violinist, organizes his life so that he never has to spend anything. Saving money makes him wildly happy, while paying for things, on the other hand, upsets him. One day, everything changes when he meets a woman and falls in love with her, as well as Laura, her daughter, whose existence he had known nothing about until then. Wanting to hide his major flaw, François starts lying to everyone around him, and his lies will end up costing him dearly. Post-credits scene: François and Laura are beside an empty road in Mexico. No vehicles pass by. Laura is exhausted. François remains optimistic and hitchhikes. A small car approaches. François tells Laura he refuses to get into that kind of car again and turns his back to the road. Laura gets up and tries to flag the car down. François tries to stop her.
