An 18-year-old from the Zurich region rejects the family printing business and takes a year-long job as a male au pair in Geneva.
The story
Eighteen-year-old Sebastian Zollweger faces pressure from his father to take over the family printing shop, but he has no interest in that future. He decides instead to spend a year in French-speaking Switzerland working as a male au pair, a choice that angers his father and challenges his assumptions about gender and sexuality. In Geneva, Sebastian joins the Dumoulin household. Madame Dumoulin, who had been seeking a young woman to care for the family, sees a male au pair as an unexpected solution. Sebastian must adjust to housework, a different language environment, and the Dumoulin children.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Sebastian Zollweger (Matthias Schoch) is an 18-year-old from the Zurich region. His father (Hanspeter Müller-Drossaart) is impatiently waiting for him to decide to take over the family business, a printing shop. Sebastian has no desire to do so and decides to spend a year in French-speaking Switzerland as a “male au pair.” The idea enrages his father. To him, his son’s choice to do work generally reserved for young women shows a tendency toward homosexuality, a possibility he would strongly disapprove of. His more mischievous sister gives him a richly illustrated edition of the Kama Sutra. He quickly finds a host family in Geneva: Madame Dumoulin (Alexandra Vandernoot), who has advertised for a young woman “au pair,” is wary of her husband’s lingering looks at the young applicants who come by. A “male au pair” therefore seems to her an ideal, and wholly unexpected, alternative. At first, Sebastian struggles to adapt to this new world, the many aspects of housework, French-speaking Switzerland, and the Dumoulin children. But in the end, he manages to find solutions to all the problems—his own, those of the Zollweger family, and those of the Dumoulin family.
