Full plot (contains spoilers)
Andrea v. Bruggern, the daughter of a wealthy landowner, is about to marry the impoverished nobleman Nikolaus v. Karpathy at his somewhat run-down estate on the Hungarian border. The groom is urgently dependent on her dowry. On the morning of the wedding, Andrea learns that her fiancé had been unfaithful to her with his maid, Anka, and that Anka and her baby are now to be expelled from the estate. Andrea flees the wedding and seeks solace in Venice. There she meets the composer Stefan Schröder, and the two fall in love. When Andrea misunderstands a meeting between the musician, who is in the midst of a divorce, and his wife, she withdraws to her father’s estate, by then pregnant and without him knowing her full name. After about eight years, her father arranges a reunion between Andrea, the composer, and their musically gifted child.
