Full plot (contains spoilers)
Two young people who have married against their families’ wishes take refuge in a small hotel near the railway station. They do not even have enough money to pay for the room, and plan to kill themselves that night. The wind stirred up by a passing train blows open the window and knocks over the glass containing the poison that was supposed to kill them. They realize that this is not the right path and flee into the rainy night, seeking shelter at the very station where they find a wallet full of banknotes. They board a train to Sanremo and try their luck at the casino. Before long, they are broke again. The young man is caught trying to take chips from a wealthy gambler, who pretends to help him but in reality wants to spend the night with the young bride in return. At first, the couple give in to the blackmail, but at the last moment they get away, leave behind the money they received, and board a train without knowing its destination. In the third-class carriage, they encounter the generosity of the other passengers, who share what little food they have with them without expecting anything in return, despite their own poverty. The young man finds work in a factory, and the couple will change their lives.
