Full plot (contains spoilers)
The young man had always made a living growing and selling vegetables. With poor harvests and a weak market, he decided to switch to other work. His father sought help and put the family cow up as collateral, while the young man borrowed a motorcycle from a cousin of his father's generation and started carrying passengers for hire. While picking up passengers at the bus station, he met Sanmei, a woman who was also Han Chinese. Sanmei had previously been tricked into going to Sichuan, China, where she married a Chinese man much older than her and had a child with him. She had returned home to attend to matters following her grandfather's death. She decided to earn some money in her hometown and then bring the child she had given birth to back from China. She went to a male relative, who introduced her to selling methamphetamine for money, and she agreed. She also recruited the young man to drive her to various places to sell meth, promising him 40 percent of the profits. Although their drug sales initially went smoothly, during one delivery the woman was arrested by police who had been lying in wait. Fortunately, the young man escaped on his motorcycle and rode home. When he got home, his father was not there. Struggling with his addiction, the young man started smoking meth again and became mentally unstable. Because his family did not redeem the cow on time, it was eventually sold and slaughtered.
