Full plot (contains spoilers)
Little Red Riding Hood lives with her mother, Annemarie, a seamstress, in a small village. Little Red Riding Hood and Anton, a villager, are teased by the other children in town. Little Red Riding Hood’s grandmother lives in a small hut in the forest and is somewhat eccentric and inventive. One day, when a chicken is found torn apart in the village at the edge of the forest, the villagers suspect that a wolf was responsible, even though there are no wolves in the area. The hunter, however, is firmly convinced that the chicken fell victim to a fox. Little Red Riding Hood isn’t worried, because to her the forest is not threatening but a place full of adventure, as her grandmother taught her. But she has no idea that a wolf really is roaming the forest. Only little Anton knows about the danger, since he has seen the wolf himself, but no one believes him, even when he tells them about it. When Little Red Riding Hood is sent off alone by her mother—at the insistence of the female mayor, who desperately wants a new dress—to take cake, wine, and medicine to her sick grandmother, she too encounters the wicked wolf. Little Red Riding Hood isn’t afraid, however, and acts completely unconcerned around him. As the girl cheerfully continues on her way to her grandmother’s, the wolf hatches a cunning plan to eat the grandmother first and then Little Red Riding Hood. He cleverly distracts the girl to gain time and gets her to tell him the way to her grandmother’s house. The wolf hurries to the house, eats the grandmother, puts on her bonnet and nightdress, and gets into bed. When Little Red Riding Hood arrives, he eats her too. Fortunately, the hunter arrives; he had built a trap for Anton’s sake after all. But only Anton is caught in it, and the hunter frees the boy. Anton tells him about the wolf, so the hunter hurries to the grandmother’s house to rescue her and Little Red Riding Hood. Their mother is already very worried. The wolf is still fast asleep when the hunter fills his belly with stones. The animal wakes briefly once more before dying for good.
