A St. Pauli supporter’s sudden romance with a Rostock waitress unfolds amid the hostility surrounding a high-risk football match.

The story

Roland travels to Rostock with fellow FC St. Pauli supporters for an away match against F.C. Hansa Rostock, a high-risk fixture amid political tensions and hostility between the fan groups. The visitors try to celebrate unnoticed in a pub, where Roland meets Conny, a waitress, and falls in love with her. When the group is recognized, Roland and his friends flee; after a chase, the police take the Rostock supporters into custody, while the visitors make it to the match. Roland later seeks Conny out again and leaves her his fan scarf. Her brother Lalla, a committed Hansa supporter, finds it in her room.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Roland travels to Rostock with other FC St. Pauli supporters for the second-division club’s away match against F.C. Hansa Rostock. The meeting between the two clubs is considered a high-risk match because St. Pauli’s fan scene is regarded as politically left-wing and there are far-right tendencies in Rostock, which had become evident just a few months earlier during the riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen. Roland’s group of four fans also gets into a confrontation with Hansa supporters. They try to celebrate without being recognized in a pub in Rostock. There Roland meets Conny, a waitress, and falls in love with her immediately. Before long, however, the group from Hamburg is found out, and Roland and his friends flee the pub. After a brief chase, the police catch the Rostock supporters and take them into custody, while the visitors from Hamburg are able to watch the match. After the game, Roland tries to see Conny again, and after a brief meeting he leaves her his fan scarf as a keepsake. Soon afterward, Roland returns to Rostock and spends a day with Conny. In the meantime, however, her brother Lalla, himself a committed Hansa supporter, finds the St. Pauli scarf in his sister’s room. That evening, Lalla and his friends confront the couple at a disco, and Roland is beaten up by them. Lalla is injured too, however, which makes him become increasingly consumed by the conflict. Roland travels back to Hamburg with Conny and shows her the city—to the great annoyance of his best friend Manni, who fears that his friendship with Roland will now suffer because of Conny. Manni even puts himself and the couple in mortal danger in a deliberately provoked car accident in an attempt to persuade Conny to return to Rostock. Roland berates Manni and convinces Conny to stay in Hamburg for the time being. Meanwhile, in Rostock, Lalla urges his friends to travel to FC St. Pauli’s following home match against Fortuna Düsseldorf and take revenge. The two groups do indeed meet in the area around the stadium, and Conny is unable to stop Lalla from stabbing Roland. Roland’s injury, amid the atmosphere of a football match, is also the film’s final scene. It is left unclear whether he survives.
