After Renate is caught with the bus driver, a school conference over her possible expulsion becomes a debate about changing views of adolescent sexuality.
The story
The film opens with young people on Munich’s Leopoldstraße, introduced by a female voice-over as “the girls of today,” honest with themselves unlike adults. During a visit to an electricity plant, Renate leaves her graduating girls’ class and returns to their bus, where she seduces the sleeping driver. Her teacher finds them having sex, and a hastily called school conference is convened with the aim of expelling Renate. Sex psychologist Dr. Bernauer joins the discussion, arguing that old moral views of the state, church and school conflict with modern research.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
At the beginning, young people are shown on Munich’s Leopoldstraße, while a female voice-over introduces them as “we, the girls of today,” who, unlike adults, are honest with themselves. It is also stated that the film is based on the records of Günther Hunold’s Sexual Report, whose afterword was written by educator Kurt Seelmann, former director of the Munich Youth Welfare Office. When a graduating class from a girls’ school visits an electricity plant, student Renate leaves the group. She returns to the group’s bus and seduces the sleeping bus driver. The teacher notices that the girl is missing and catches the two having sex on the bus. Back at school, a school conference is hastily called with the aim of expelling Renate. Sex psychologist Dr. Bernauer joins the discussion and argues that the long-outdated moral views of the state, church, and school are in no way consistent with modern scientific research. He then uses examples to explain youth sexual morality to the conference: Fifteen-year-old Barbara is having an affair with her own stepfather. She tells the interviewer that it began when she was nine or ten, while we see her sitting naked astride her hands-on stepfather’s knees. Susanne is getting private mathematics lessons and seduces her tutor. Elisabeth is caught masturbating by her conservative mother. Marlene seduces the sports teacher. A girl tells the chaplain some fantastic stories about sex. Several students seduce the swimming-pool attendant at night; he is convicted after one of the girls becomes pregnant. Lilo can be persuaded to have sex with her acquaintance only by her friends. Four inexperienced teenagers go looking for sexual adventures at a construction site. The staged scenes are interrupted by street interviews in which a reporter asks women about their attitudes toward sex and masturbation, as well as their experiences. Impressed by Dr. Bernauer’s examples, the parents’ council eventually decides against expelling Renate and calls for sexual freedom for minors as well.
