A young director’s attempt to capture real sex and love blurs the boundary between her film and her own life.
The story
Nina Bader, a young director, sets out to make a film about “real” sex and love, with events unfolding in the moment around a loosely sketched screenplay. In an empty Berlin apartment, she meets actors Hans Alexander Dahn and Marie Traunstein for test shoots. As the project develops, Nina finds it difficult to keep the planned work separate from reality: the lines between the film and the people making it begin to blur, and Nina becomes involved as a person rather than remaining only its director.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Nina Bader, a young director, wants to make a film about “real” sex and love, in which the action is to unfold in the moment alongside a loosely sketched screenplay. She meets the actors Hans Alexander Dahn and Marie Traunstein for test shoots in an empty apartment in Berlin. It becomes clear that the project is not so easy to bring to life: reality and fiction become intertwined as the piece is developed, and Nina Bader herself takes part as a person, not just as the director. On the sixth day of the film, which is divided into seven days by on-screen text, the director and the lead actor talk in the street about how they met three years earlier, when they did not have sex. The two go to a darkroom; there, each goes into a separate room, from where they can watch the other through a camera and screen and talk by phone. They watch each other masturbate and eventually have sex in one of the rooms. On the seventh day, Nina Bader declares the project a failure because she is unsure whether she really wants to show true feelings.
