Six residents reveal a Venice beyond its postcard image, prompting a reflection on what makes a city.
The story
Through interviews with six residents, the film explores everyday life in Venice beyond the tourist crowds and picturesque sights. Its subjects include an archivist, a chambermaid, an archaeologist, an artist, a former thief, and a child. Their experiences frame questions about what it means to live in the city and what, in fact, makes a city. The film considers Venice not only as architecture and cultural heritage, but also as a place shaped by its residents, their work, and a distinctive way of life that can be difficult to define.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Through the experiences of six residents, the film presents a mosaic of Venice beyond the tourist crowds and sights. In doing so, it asks what actually makes a city. It highlights buildings, culture, and residents as essential components, as well as a certain way of life or an idea of what a city is—both of which are difficult to define. The Venice that extends beyond its picturesque backdrop and Donna Leon’s crime novels is also home to ordinary residents who go about their work every day. What is it like to live here? To explore this, the film interviews an archivist, a chambermaid, an archaeologist, an artist, a former thief, and a child.
