Full plot (contains spoilers)
Gilbert Mardeau works for a bank. His wife, Michéle, calls him at the office to tell him that their child, André, has been kidnapped. When the kidnapper contacts Gilbert, he demands a ransom of four thousand dollars. Since Gilbert does not have that much money, he fakes a robbery while transporting money on the bank’s behalf. Later, the kidnapper is found dead, with only a small part of the ransom. Michéle receives at home a bloodied dummy made to look like the child, and because of this she commits suicide. Gilbert, who is behind the whole thing, is finally free of his wife and in possession of most of the money, and flees with his mistress, Britt.
