Full plot (contains spoilers)

Singer Ricky is the star of a club in Liverpool. He has stolen the blonde Mary from rocker Steve and is performing for a Mod audience when the rockers raid the club for revenge. Ricky’s rival wants Mary back and attacks the young singer with a knife. Mary throws herself between them and is stabbed to death. The Mods and rockers flee when the police arrive. Ricky also manages to escape. A friend gives him money, and he hitchhikes via London to Paris. On the way, he meets the young Jasmin and goes with her to a wedding, where he performs for the couple. Jasmin collects money for him, but Ricky still wants to travel on to Genoa, even though she invites him to stay with her. In Genoa, Ricky hopes to speak to Ambassador Robert Fuller, but learns that he has already gone to Rome, where he works as a manager for an oil company. With the help of the young man nicknamed “Hinke,” whom Ricky saves from a group of thugs, he gets enough money to continue on to Rome. In a bar, he also meets the attractive Sonia, for whom he performs and whose money he refuses. In Rome, Ricky finally meets Robert, who is his father. The last time they saw each other was three years ago, when the rebellious Ricky left his father to become a musician in Liverpool. Ricky also sees Sonia again at Robert’s house. She is his father’s lover and will probably soon be Ricky’s stepmother as well. Sonia flirts with Ricky, but he begins to take an interest in Sonia’s younger sister, Martine. When Martine is made to believe that he prefers Sonia to her, she breaks up with Ricky. He retreats to a club, where he channels his disappointment into music. He begins a concert marathon, and soon the newspapers are reporting on him. The record is 75 hours of nonstop playing, and Ricky keeps going for a long time. His father, who has separated from Sonia and will be going abroad for an extended period, respects his determination. A few minutes before Ricky is due to set the record, Martine arrives at the club with her new boyfriend. When they leave again after a short while, Ricky follows them. He no longer cares about the record, which he would have needed to play only five more minutes to set. He loses sight of Martine, but follows her to her house after hearing that it is going to be a wild evening. Ricky reaches Martine’s house just as her friends are pressuring her to perform a striptease. He storms into the house, beats up all the men, and leaves with Martine, with whom he has reconciled.
