After Frank’s father dies, he returns to Jewish tradition and begins a religious life, including planning to have Simon circumcised before his bar mitzvah. Simon is uneasy, and Hannah opposes it. Full plot (contains spoilers)

Twelve-year-old Simon is on the verge of puberty, and life is putting him to the test: His mother, Hannah, has left him and his father, Frank. Frank hopes the separation will only be temporary. Hannah, meanwhile, has reinvented herself as the author of erotic novels. The family is Jewish, though this had not played a major role until the parents separated. But following his father’s death and the separation, Frank turns back to tradition and begins to lead a consistently religious life. This includes having his previously uncircumcised son Simon circumcised in time for his bar mitzvah. The very thought of it makes Simon uneasy, especially since his mother is against it. Then a woman enters Simon’s life and makes all his worries vanish at once. The Jewish community has a new rabbi, and Simon falls for the clergyperson the moment he first sees her: Rebecca Tannenbaum is an attractive woman in her early thirties who enchants not only Simon but his father as well. With his two friends, Clemens and Ben, Simon decides to win Rebecca over by every means possible. But he sees his father as his greatest rival in this contest. An unexpected fighting spirit stirs in the boy. He is ready to go all in and embark on his first campaign of conquest: from then on, Rebecca is watched day and night, and everything about her is collected, meticulously catalogued and studied in the basement. Simon also spares no effort to impress the object of his desire. Unfortunately, the collection of photos and personal belongings of Rebecca hidden in the basement—one any stalker would be proud of—is discovered by a member of the Jewish community, with unpleasant consequences for Frank’s reputation. After learning that Rebecca considers religious circumcision important, Simon decides to go ahead with it. To avoid provoking further arguments between his parents, he plans to perform it himself using a magic ring he ordered online. Complications arise, however, and his foreskin is ultimately removed at the hospital. When Rebecca visits him there, he confesses that it was he, not Frank, who collected her photos. He explains that he did it because he is in love with her, though his feelings are unrequited. Rebecca makes it clear that she is not the right person for him. A short time later, Simon’s bar mitzvah takes place. His parents are now divorced, so Frank can dance exuberantly with Rebecca. And Simon can turn his attention to a girl his own age.
