When their daughter brings her boyfriend home, a longtime couple confronts clashing expectations about love, family, and marriage.

The story

Balbina and Inka, an unmarried couple living in Vienna’s 18th district, have raised their daughter Hedwig in a household shaped by their different values and ambitions. Hedwig brings home Andreas, her boyfriend from Tyrol, prompting Inka to react with alarm to her daughter’s relationship with a man. The confrontation deepens as Balbina and Inka argue over parenting and their division of work at home. Edgar, a longtime family friend who is now a Catholic priest and is partnered with a Protestant pastor, tries to mediate. Meanwhile, Hedwig has confided in Edgar about her wish to marry, a subject she finds difficult to raise with her mothers.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Balbina and Inka are an unmarried couple who live in Vienna’s 18th district. Their daughter Hedwig is named after the writer and women’s rights activist Hedwig Dohm and is supposed to have been conceived through artificial insemination. Edgar is a friend of the family. In the early 2000s, he had pretended to be Inka’s notary-certified life partner. Balbina, who is working on a feminist edition of the Bible, advises Hedwig never to get married because relationships are difficult enough as it is. Edgar is now a Catholic priest and is in a relationship with Dirk, a Protestant pastor. Hedwig introduces her boyfriend, Andreas Hofer from Tyrol, to her mothers and Edgar. Inka is horrified that Hedwig is dating a man and wants to book her a place in therapy right away. This leads to an argument between Balbina and Inka, in which Inka accuses Balbina of excessive drinking and smoking. Balbina retorts that she needs them for her writing. Hedwig had talked to Edgar about getting married because she finds it difficult to discuss the subject with her mothers. Edgar tries to mediate between the young couple and Hedwig’s mothers. Balbina, however, asks Edgar to talk Andreas out of wanting to marry Hedwig. The fact that Balbina was able to focus on her career while Inka took care of the home and child leads to another argument between them. On Balbina’s recommendation, Hedwig had gone skiing in Tyrol at the hotel run by Petra and Dietmar, Andreas’s parents, where she and Andreas met. Since his parents are on their way to Vienna for the Tyrolean Ball, Hedwig invites them to her mothers’ apartment. Once everyone has gathered, Andreas announces that Hedwig is pregnant. When Inka also tells Balbina that the young couple wants to marry in church, Balbina feels provoked by Hedwig. Inka finally admits that Edgar is Hedwig’s biological father, because the artificial insemination had not worked. Hedwig had already suspected this some time earlier and had a genetic test done. Balbina was the only one who didn’t know. The notebook containing Balbina’s feminist Bible was also damaged by spilled wine, and her work is lost. Dietmar remembers that he and Balbina had sex on New Year’s Eve 2000, when she was vacationing with him in Tyrol. For a moment, he had feared that Hedwig might be his daughter. Balbina and Inka reconcile. They also wish their daughter happiness in whatever way she chooses. Since Hedwig isn’t sure whether Andreas is the father of her child, she initially wants to break up with him. He doesn’t care whether he is the father, not least because Dietmar isn’t his biological father either. So the two stay together, but put off getting married for the time being. The family eventually celebrates together, reconciled, at Toni’s local pub. Some months later, the assembled family puzzle over whom Hedwig’s child resembles.
