Full plot (contains spoilers)
Maria and Josef Schröder are about to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Their 38-year-old son, Wolfgang “Wolferl” Schröder, is “Mommy’s favorite.” Still living with his parents, this mama’s boy plays with his model railway and lets his mother cook for him, while working as a bank employee. His parents, meanwhile, have little left to say to each other, and Josef is having an affair with Sylvi. One day, after Wolfgang’s two female colleagues give him a voucher for a beauty consultation and recommend that he do something for himself, he meets Eva Krupke, a beautician from Saxony. Eva doesn’t just make Wolfgang look like a real man; she transforms him from a wallflower with health-insurance glasses and a side-parted hairstyle into an attractive bachelor. Wolfgang’s two colleagues are delighted by the transformation, as is his sister Nannerl, who is married to Adam and is the mother of twins Dean and Martin. His mother Maria, however, is horrified when Wolfgang and Eva begin a relationship, and Wolfgang packs his things at home and moves in with the woman he loves. At Josef and Maria’s 40th anniversary celebration, Maria meets Eva. While the rest of the family warmly welcomes Eva, Maria is hostile toward her. Later that evening, Josef is picked up by his mistress, and Maria, by then drunk, collapses. When she wakes up, her son stays loyally by her side. Eva is disappointed because he is now ignoring her, and she had actually wanted to tell him that she was pregnant. Instead, she confides in Nannerl, asking her not to tell her brother. Maria receives a letter informing her that Josef has filed for divorce. Maria threatens suicide if Wolfgang leaves her too. Wolfgang only learns of Eva’s pregnancy some time later, from his father. Despite Maria’s renewed threat, Wolfgang then leaves his mother, who throws herself from the balcony. She is taken to the hospital, where doctors find only a few bruises. Eva and Wolfgang eventually become parents and have a happy relationship.
