Four comic vignettes begin with suspicions, setbacks and plans to slip away from obligations.
The story
Four comic stories follow separate schemes and complications. Aldo, a dishonest private investigator, is hired to watch a woman whose husband wrongly suspects her of infidelity. Dante Zatteroni, a former footballer banned for life after throwing a match, secretly coaches children in the Roman countryside, but flees after their parents accuse him of interfering with their studies. In northern Italy, he meets a former teammate coaching a women’s football team, whose star player is injured before a decisive title match. Meanwhile, film producer Giangi plots to avoid a boat trip with his wife and meet his French lover at his villa. A Venice affair is also among the stories.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Aldo is a dishonest private investigator hired to keep a woman under constant surveillance because her husband wrongly suspects her of cheating. After investigating, Aldo concludes that the woman is faithful to her husband. Instead of revealing the truth, however, he does everything he can to convince his gullible client that his wife is unfaithful, even trying to manufacture false evidence through underhanded tricks, with the help of his trusted accomplice Broccolini, code-named “Agent XX2.” But reality turns out to be far more cynical: the client is the one cheating on his wife, and with the investigator’s own wife, no less. Dante Zatteroni, a former footballer who has been banned for life for throwing a match, is reduced to secretly coaching children in the Roman countryside, surrounded by poultry. He hopes to get some of them into professional football, but is forced to flee after their furious parents accuse him of interfering with their children’s studies. He moves to northern Italy, where he meets a former teammate, now coaching a women’s football team. The team’s best player is injured on the eve of the decisive match for the title against their direct rivals. Dante comes up with a solution: he disguises himself as a woman, passing himself off as a Polish footballer, and is signed up for the match. He shows off all his skill, scoring no fewer than five goals. But an opponent’s free kick hits him right between the legs, and the pain he suffers gives away the deception. Giangi, a film producer dominated by his wife Violante, devises a scheme to get out of a boat trip with her and meet his French lover Françoise (a stunning Nadia Cassini) at his villa. Before the homeowner and his lover arrive, though, two thieves posing as movers persuade the caretaker to unload a valuable wardrobe inside the villa. Pietro, their third accomplice, is hiding inside the piece of furniture; once left alone, he starts cleaning the house out of its jewelry. But the plan is thrown into disarray when the two lovers arrive, forcing the thief to hide inside the wardrobe again. Just as they are about to make love, Violante unexpectedly arrives, forcing Françoise to hide in the same wardrobe as well. An immediate “solidarity” develops between the petty thief and the young woman. Noticing the wardrobe move suspiciously, Violante opens its door, but sees only Pietro. To get himself out of trouble, he pretends to be Giangi’s lover, but Giangi, feeling doomed by being passed off as a “fag,” bursts out and reveals that Françoise is there. The next day, the two thieves return to retrieve the wardrobe, but inside it they find Giangi, bound hand and foot, while Pietro is comfortably back at the villa, making love to Violante and Françoise. In Venice, a fling between two lovers becomes complicated when a notary who lives in the same building as the woman suddenly dies, setting off a series of misunderstandings. To explain his presence in the building, and especially in the woman’s apartment, the man claims to be the deceased’s illegitimate son—the very person the woman’s husband had been commissioned to track down for purposes of legal recognition. During the funeral, finally left alone, the lovers manage to come together on the very bed where the deceased’s body had been lying.
