Full plot (contains spoilers)
A robbery takes place at an antique shop, and the owner, Christian Zoschitz, is shot. He quickly tells the police that he suspects Benedikt Maurer, who in turn accuses Zoschitz of being responsible for the death of his wife, Susanne, exactly 16 years earlier. After a car accident outside her home, Karin Lossow takes in a woman and her son, who want to continue their journey as soon as possible. The woman appears to have been abused, so Karin wants to find out more. Later, she finds jewelry and a pistol in the crashed car. The storm in the area grows increasingly severe, and everyone barricades themselves where they are. The mobile phone networks go down. Karin and her great-niece Merle try to inform the police, and with the pastor’s help they send several faxes from a nearby church. At the police station, Ellen Norgaard, Holm Brendel and Dorit Martens question the two feuding men, Zoschitz and Maurer; tensions are high. At the antique shop, Rainer Witt is visited by two men to whom Zoschitz owes a lot of money, and they tie him up. Zoschitz’s stepdaughter, who is looking for her mother, Irina, eventually frees him. On the drive to the police station, she tells Witt that Irina wanted to leave Zoschitz, who regularly beat her. By now, the faxes have been noticed at the station. But before anyone can set out for Karin’s, Zoschitz manages to take Dorit hostage. Karin learns from the injured woman that she is Irina Zoschitz, who had been planning to separate from her husband with her daughter and son, Micha. In the robbery, she intended to take her share of what they had together. In the process, she accidentally shot her husband, who normally does not go to the antique shop on that day. The situation at the station and at Karin’s grows more tense once the mobile networks come back, as Zoschitz talks on the phone with her son Micha, who is torn between his parents after learning new information about the robbery. After the call ends, Zoschitz shoots Dorit. The radio reports that one person has died and another is seriously injured as Witt arrives at the police station with Zoschitz’s stepdaughter, and Karin arrives with Irina and Micha. Dorit is taken to hospital. Given the danger, Ellen had been forced to shoot Zoschitz. Irina finally takes both her children in her arms.
