As a team investigates a death by the seaside, Karin seeks therapy for nightmares and suspicions surrounding her daughter’s death—then her therapist disappears.
The story
A jogger finds a dead man on a bench by the seaside promenade. With no visible signs of violence, his identity is initially unknown, and Rainer Witt’s team begins investigating. Meanwhile, Karin starts therapy in Poland with Dr. Maurycy Wójcik to address nightmares connected to her daughter Julia’s death. During a session, she says she suspects gang leader Zielinski, rather than the man arrested at the time, was responsible. Wójcik abruptly ends the session and soon disappears. Karin suspects the disappearance is no coincidence and learns that Zielinski’s sister-in-law, Emilia Gerdes, had also been treated by him.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A jogger finds a dead man on a bench near the seaside promenade. There are no visible signs of violence, and at first his identity cannot be established. Rainer Witt and his team begin investigating. Meanwhile, Karin starts psychotherapy in Poland with Dr. Maurycy Wójcik to work through her new nightmares in connection with the death of her daughter Julia. When Karin tells him during a session that she suspects it was gang leader Zielinski, not Keyser, who was arrested at the time, the therapist abruptly ends the session. A little later, the therapist disappears, which Karin cannot believe is a coincidence. She discovers that Emilia Gerdes, Zielinski’s sister-in-law, had been treated by Wójcik. When Karin asks the woman questions at her bakery, Emilia asks her to leave. Her son Adam seems unsettled by Karin’s questions. Karin helps Wójcik’s husband search for the missing therapist, while the Polish police show little interest in Karin’s suspicion that Gerdes is connected to the case. Wójcik’s husband finds confirmation of Karin’s suspicions in the therapist’s notes. Karin goes to see Zielinski and confronts him, but he denies everything. Meanwhile, the dead man on the bench is identified as Udo Jung, who had arranged to meet a woman through online dating and was incapacitated with LSD. After the police arrest the woman while she is selling Jung’s SUV, the investigators learn that the drugs came from someone named Adam. Adam calls Karin, whose number she left at the bakery, and confesses that he killed Wójcik after the therapist tried to ask him questions about Zielinski. Now Adam wishes he were dead too. Karin tracks the young man down to a building in the old harbor. He tells her that he saw Zielinski kill Karin’s daughter. When Adam tries to shoot himself, Karin intervenes and stops him. The police eventually find Wójcik’s body and arrest Zielinski on the basis of Adam’s statement. Karin meets her son-in-law Stefan on the pier. On the anniversary of Julia’s death, she had already seen him again at the cemetery after a long time, but then stood him up at a date they had arranged afterward. He tells her that he is in a new relationship and has got his problems under control.
