A solitary Belgian prison guard’s tango lessons bring him into contact with a woman connected to inmates at his prison.
The story
After a cash-in-transit robbery goes wrong, Belgian prison guard Jean-Christophe, known as JC, leads an orderly, solitary life, with tango as his one indulgence. At a class, he meets newcomer Alice and dances with her; later, he sees her in the prison visiting room. She is connected to two inmates: Fernand, her husband, and Dominic, the father of her son. Prison rules forbid guards from associating with prisoners’ families, putting JC’s new acquaintance in tension with his work.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film opens with an attempted cash-in-transit van robbery that goes wrong. Then we follow Jean-Christophe, known as JC, a Belgian prison guard. He lives with only his goldfish for company and leads an orderly, dull existence. His one indulgence in everyday life is learning to tango. One evening, at his class, JC meets a newcomer, Alice, and dances with her. Later, he sees her again in the visiting room of the prison where he works. First with one man, then with another... Alice is the wife of two inmates, Fernand—her husband—and Dominic, the father of her son Antonio. They are the two men seen at the beginning of the film during a robbery that went awry. The rules forbid guards from associating with prisoners’ families. But instead of ending their relationship or telling his boss about an assault, JC says nothing, breaking the rules.
