The story

Thirteen-year-old Julka travels to Poznań with her friend Olek for the opening of an exhibition curated by her aunt. The showpiece, Claude Monet’s “The Path to Pourville Beach,” has been stolen and replaced by a copy, which is destroyed by a time bomb during the opening. Inspector Rafalski arrests the curator and Kaja, who made and sold the copy. Julka and Olek set out to find the real thief and prove her aunt’s innocence; Kaja’s cheeky daughter Felka joins them. Their only lead is the name of a woman said to have stolen the same painting twenty years earlier.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Thirteen-year-old Julka and her friend Olek travel to Poznań, where an exhibition of paintings curated by Julka’s aunt is about to open. The exhibition’s showpiece, Claude Monet’s painting “The Path to Pourville Beach,” was stolen the night before and replaced with a copy, which is destroyed by a time bomb during the opening. The police inspector, Rafalski, is called in and arrests the curator, as well as Kaja, who made the copy and sold it to a client. Julka and Olek set out to find the real thief and prove Julka’s aunt’s innocence. The cheeky Felka, Kaja’s daughter, joins them. They have only a slim lead: the name of a woman said to have stolen the same painting twenty years earlier and fallen into disgrace because of it. As it turns out, the woman has been dead for years, but in their search the children have uncovered other interesting clues. Their teamwork is hampered, however, by personal differences: Olek has fallen in love with Felka, and Julka feels left out. After the three make up, they pick up the trail of the real art thieves again: a woman they had noticed before and her brother—it is Rafalski, who deliberately planted evidence to frame innocent people. The children manage to secure the painting and have Rafalski arrested, while the woman escapes. In the end, everyone celebrates at a big party, and Julka is now comfortable with her friendship with both Felka and Olek.
