At an elite boarding school, a clique of four students’ pursuit of extreme escapes turns into escalating torment of their weakest member.

The story

Four students at an elite boarding school form a clique and secretly leave the school after classes to drink and party. Their wealthy parents have placed them in—or effectively banished them to—a gilded cage, and the students seek out extremes as an escape. The parties turn increasingly violent, with the weakest member, Leibnitz, bearing the brunt of the group’s excesses. Dyrbusch, the leader, and Bogatsch, his enforcer, intensify their torment. Leibnitz endures it in silence, afraid that resisting will cost him the group’s friendship and leave him an outcast. Konstantin recognizes the moral stakes but hesitates to challenge the others.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Four students at an elite boarding school, who have formed a clique, secretly sneak out of the school after classes to drink and party. They seek out extremes to escape their gilded cage, into which their wealthy parents have put—or effectively banished—them. Their parties erupt into violent excesses, directed above all at the weakest member of the group, Leibnitz. Dyrbusch, the group’s leader, and Bogatsch, his “enforcer,” do not stop tormenting Leibnitz with ever greater intensity. He suffers in silence, afraid of losing their “friendship” and being cast out of the group. Konstantin, the follower, is the only one in the group who understands the moral implications of what they are doing. But he hesitates to stand up to the others. As a result, they sink ever deeper into a spiral of violence, until the inevitable happens.
