A separated father trying to win back his wife starts over as a self-employed male midwife, balancing difficult patients and complicated secrets.

The story

Toni Hasler is separated from his wife, Hanna, and is staying with his best friend while hoping to win her back. When Hanna asks him to accompany her to an apartment viewing, Toni discovers that the tenant, Ida, is pregnant and in labor. Ida’s heart failure makes the pregnancy dangerous, and she is overwhelmed by the prospect of motherhood. Toni tries to persuade her not to give the baby up for adoption, but his defiance of the new head midwife’s instructions costs him his hospital job. A former boss encourages him to work independently with Luise Fuchs, who is opening a practice. Their partnership is complicated by a secret connection from Toni’s past and the need to keep the new business afloat.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Toni Hasler is separated from his wife, Hanna. Since he can’t afford a place of his own, he is staying with his best friend, Franzl. He still hopes to win his wife back, though, so he meets her for coffee. She has an apartment viewing at short notice and asks Toni to come along, since it’s easier to get an apartment as a “couple.” Toni notices that Ida, the current tenant, is unwell. When she collapses, he examines her and realizes that she is pregnant and in labor. Because she has heart failure, pregnancy is dangerous for her. At the clinic, Toni learns from his former boss, Dr. Prantlhuber, that he is retiring and that Evi Höllriegl will be taking over as head of the midwives. Ida is overwhelmed by motherhood and wants to give the baby up for adoption. Toni can’t accept this and wants to persuade Ida to keep the baby. Because he defies the instructions of his new boss, he loses his job at the hospital. He meets with Dr. Prantlhuber and tells him what happened. The doctor advises him to finally go into business for himself, and tells him that his daughter, Luise Fuchs, is about to open a practice and is looking for a midwife. When Toni goes to look over the premises with Franzl, he realizes he knows Luise from somewhere. She is the woman he had a one-night stand with at the midwives’ carnival—and the reason his wife, Hanna, left him. Under these circumstances, he can’t and doesn’t want to work there, because it would thwart his plans with Hanna. Luise also has a feeling she knows Toni, but because he didn’t take off his rabbit mask when they first met, she can’t place him. Toni therefore registers at the employment office, where he is told that, as a male midwife, he has little chance of finding another job and should retrain. Since he doesn’t want to do that, he decides to work with Luise after all. To cover the costs of the practice, he also has to drive a taxi at night. Luise demands that he give her patients priority. On his first home visit to Gina, who is pregnant, he runs into trouble with her jealous boyfriend, Costa, who thinks Toni is her lover. Luise treats the cut on his forehead that Costa gave him with a punch. Ida turns up at the practice with her baby, and Toni is delighted that she kept the child. But she is overwhelmed and asks Toni for help. When Gina shows up at her next appointment with a different man, Toni is completely baffled. He goes to help Ida and learns more about her and the baby’s father. He then sets out to find Jan Rabe, the father, who runs a large advertising agency. Ida had kept her illness and pregnancy from him. Jan and Toni visit Ida, and Jan promises to help her. When Toni leaves his phone at the practice, Luise brings it to his home. There she meets Hanna and his children for the first time, as Toni is celebrating his 40th birthday. Hanna spontaneously invites Luise to join the celebrations. Toni notices that his rabbit mask is lying around the apartment and has to hide it. His daughter Josie is still annoyed that she can’t go to France on holiday with her friends because there isn’t enough money. Luise offers her a job helping out at the practice so she can earn some extra pocket money. Jan comes by the practice and tells Toni that he is getting married in two weeks. At first Toni thinks he means Ida, but Jan has since found a new girlfriend. He advises Jan to tell Ida, though. Gina collapses at the baby park while shopping with her third boyfriend. Her other two boyfriends also happen to be there. She calls Leo, who suspects pregnancy poisoning and takes her to the clinic. After the birth, Toni finally intends to tell Luise the truth, but she falls asleep first. Back at the practice, Luise gets a call from the pharmacy saying that someone has filled a prescription for an antipsychotic medication in her name. She quickly figures out it could only have been Josie. She goes to see her at home, where Josie admits that the medication is for her boyfriend, who has exam anxiety. Luise happens to spot the rabbit mask and asks Josie who it belongs to. At that moment, Toni comes home. Luise wants nothing more to do with him and throws him out of the practice. When Jan arrives at his office, he finds his baby there alone. He goes to Toni because he is afraid Ida might hurt herself after learning that Jan is getting married. Toni has an idea where she might be, because he once saw a drawing of a mountain peak at her place. Jan knows where it is, and they search for her and find her. Toni tries to convince her she is making a mistake, and when Luise arrives with her baby, Ida abandons her plan. Luise talks to her father, who reproaches her and explains that Toni can only work at her practice because he also drives a taxi, and that there is no better midwife than Toni. Luise looks for Toni and finds him in his taxi. She offers to let him come back on the condition that they have no more secrets from each other. He can pay the security deposit once he has the money together.
