A bodyguard’s loyalty to the minister he protects is tested when he suspects the minister has sexually assaulted the woman he loves.
The story
Jonas Neimann is the bodyguard of Minister Magnus Mittendorf, whose past kindness toward Jonas’s sick mother has fostered an almost friendly bond despite the strict demands of the job. Jonas is secretly dating Katharina Borba, a rising press secretary whose political ideas are often appropriated by her rival, the press chief. After a political celebration, Katharina stops responding to Jonas. Her account of what happened at the party leaves him suspicious of Mittendorf, but she fears that reporting the minister would only harm her and asks Jonas not to intervene. Jonas is caught between his professional duty to protect Mittendorf and his growing doubts about the man he serves.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Jonas Neimann works as a bodyguard for Minister Magnus Mittendorf. Although he maintains professional boundaries, the two have an almost friendly relationship, ever since Mittendorf went out of his way a few years ago to help Jonas’s sick mother. Jonas’s job demands absolute loyalty to the person he is protecting; everything is strictly regulated. He is in a relationship with Katharina Borba, a rising new press secretary, but they keep it discreetly secret in their workplace. With her innovative ideas and savvy use of social media, Katharina has a lot of potential on the political stage. Press chief Lenterer sees her as a serious rival, so when she speaks with Mittendorf, he cuts her off or presents her ideas as his own. One day, after his wife has turned him down, Mittendorf spontaneously invites Katharina to accompany him to a concert, and Jonas shows signs of mild jealousy. After a political success followed by a convivial, alcohol-fueled celebration, Katharina does not respond to Jonas’s messages. The next day, Mittendorf buys her a large bouquet of flowers, making Jonas even more suspicious. Eventually, Jonas manages to talk to Katharina. She tells him about the party. She had gotten drunk and lain down in Mittendorf’s office; later, Mittendorf came in, groped her, and finally ejaculated on her. Jonas wants her to report him, but she does not want to, fearing it would do her more harm, and asks Jonas not to get involved. Soon afterward, Katharina starts working for another minister and almost completely cuts off contact with Jonas. Using security-service video footage, Jonas manages to piece together at least some of what happened on the night of the party from the camera in the anteroom of Mittendorf’s office. It shows Mittendorf entering the office shortly after Katharina and leaving a little later with his trousers unfastened. Jonas wrestles with himself and with his job, and also discusses the video with his superior. His superior says it is not proof and that no report has been filed. He advises Jonas to finish his duties professionally. At one of Mittendorf’s next public appearances, a man attacks the minister with a knife, but Jonas successfully fends him off and becomes his charge’s rescuer. At a later meeting with Mittendorf, Jonas says he will no longer work for him and gives him three days to file a self-report. When Mittendorf replies that this would also have negative consequences for Jonas, Jonas says he is willing to accept them. A little later, Jonas learns that the minister has resigned from all his posts, and finds a copy of the self-report in his mail. Later, when Jonas meets Katharina on the street and she starts to walk away, he only tells her that he did not do it for her, but for himself. He is sorry, but he had to do it that way. As he walks away, Katharina calls after him, “Jonas?” and he turns around.
