The story
Several years after the events of The Best Intentions, Anna and her husband Henrik, a clergyman, find themselves drifting apart in everyday life. Anna has met a young student, Tomas Egerman, and a secret, tentative infatuation has grown between them. Conflicted by her feelings and guilty about betraying Henrik, Anna reaches out after many years to Jacob, the priest who prepared her for confirmation. Their conversations, along with discussions with Henrik, Tomas, her mother Karin, and her friend Märta, accompany Anna as she faces uncertainty about what to do with her life.

As a standalone continuation of the longer series The Best Intentions, this story revisits the central couple, Anna (Pernilla August) and her husband, the clergyman Henrik (Samuel Fröler), several years later in the twentieth century and explores their marriage. The couple have begun to drift apart in their everyday lives, and Anna has happened to make the acquaintance of a young student, Tomas Egerman (Thomas Hanzon). A secret, tentative infatuation has developed between them. Anna is consumed by conflicting feelings and guilt over betraying her husband, and, at a loss, gets in touch after many years with Jacob (Max von Sydow), the priest who prepared her for confirmation. Throughout the series, we follow Anna above all in profound, existential conversations with the people around her: besides Jacob, Henrik and Tomas, there are also her mother, Karin Åkerblom (Anita Björk), and her friend Märta (Gunnel Fred). The question is which path she will manage to choose as she goes on with her life.
