The story
Seasoned detectives Franck and Rupert, longtime friends in a criminal investigation unit, take it upon themselves to arrest two crooks without a warrant on a Sunday morning. The confrontation ends with both crooks dead. In one man's pocket, Rupert finds a phone number and seeks out Fred, a retired former colleague. Fred reveals a tip about the place and time of a major drug deal that the dead crook had planned to hijack. The three men persuade themselves that stealing from criminals is not immoral and decide to carry out the heist themselves.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Franck (Victor Lanoux) and Rupert (Jean Rochefort) are two seasoned detectives in the criminal investigation unit, colleagues and longtime friends. One Sunday morning, they take it upon themselves to arrest two crooks without a warrant. A confrontation ensues, and both crooks are killed. In one of their pockets, Rupert finds the phone number of a former colleague, Fred (Maurice Biraud), who is retired. Rupert goes to see him, and Fred reveals that he has a “tip”: he knows the place and time of a major drug deal that the dead crook had planned to hijack. The three men gradually convince themselves that robbing criminals would be nothing immoral, and decide to pull the heist themselves. When the day comes, they carry out the operation without a hitch and make off with the drugs and money. As they divide the spoils, Franck has a premonition: it is far too much money for anyone to let them off the hook. Three months later, a horribly disfigured body is found outside the home of Franck’s girlfriend, who is also Rupert’s ex-wife. It is Fred’s body. The two detectives know they are now being hunted by someone ruthless and unscrupulous. They also know they can rely only on themselves, because they cannot admit to their department that they were involved in the affair.
