Full plot (contains spoilers)

Carla has divorced Vito, a man from a prominent Roman family, with whom she has three children: Nicola, Rosa, and the youngest, Mara. The children were placed in their mother’s custody, and they live together in an apartment in Rome. The divorce was acrimonious, as her ex-husband had behaved obsessively and violently toward Carla. When the youngest daughter’s birthday arrives, Vito is invited over to celebrate with her. After the evening ends, Vito disappears without a trace, prompting both his ex-wife and the children of his new partner to join the search. The man’s body is found by the Tiber River, pierced by two stab wounds. Carla confesses to the murder, claiming self-defense. She says that her husband attacked her during an argument at the birthday celebration. Prosecutor Alaimo’s investigation leads her to consider the possibility that the crime was premeditated; however, the evidence gathered and the court hearings bring new details to light and raise suspicions about the relationship between the former spouses and the father’s relationship with his children.
