One of the few who does is Mario Serranò, a handsome young man hoping to lose his Calabrian accent. When a speeding car nearly hits Mario as he leaves home, Luca pulls him out of its path in front of Mario’s aunt, Angela. She takes Luca under her wing. Though he previously had no powerful connections, he now finds himself protected by the Serranòs, a hugely powerful family of ’Ndrangheta members.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Luca is a former actor turned diction teacher: a precariously employed man of our time who has a hard time getting his students to pay him. One of the few who do pay is Mario Serranò, a handsome young man trying to lose his Calabrian accent. One day, as Mario is leaving his house, a speeding car nearly hits him, and Luca manages to yank him out of the way just in time, right before the eyes of Angela, the boy’s aunt. From then on, Angela Serranò takes the hapless Luca under her wing. Until then, he had had no powerful connections, but now he is protected by a whole string of godfathers: the Serranòs are in fact a hugely powerful family of ’Ndrangheta members who hold the fate of the city in their hands.
