The story

Luca and Sara invite two friends home, including a believer in soulmates. To challenge that belief, they recount their attempts to pair four friends: researcher Giulia, womanizing lawyer Dario, anesthesiologist Chiara, and publishing-house employee Matteo. Giulia and Dario have a direct first date, while Chiara and Matteo soon become a committed couple. Giulia then accepts a job offer in Lisbon; Dario resists a long-distance relationship, leading to arguments and strain between them. Their accounts put romantic destiny to the test.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Luca and Sara invite two friends to their home, one of whom believes in the romantic theory of soulmates. To disprove it, they tell their guests the story of four of their friends and how they tried to set them up with one another: Chiara is a passionate anesthesiologist, Giulia is a researcher, Dario is a womanizing lawyer, and Matteo works for a publishing house. On their first date, Giulia and Dario get straight to the point, immediately sleep together, and then part ways that same evening. Later, however, they realize that they have never stopped thinking about each other since that night, and that they have fallen in love. Soon afterward, Giulia receives an important job offer in Lisbon. She accepts and leaves, despite Dario’s hesitation and resistance to a long-distance relationship. This leads to many arguments between them, and they eventually reach breaking point when Giulia tells Dario she has to stay in Lisbon for another six months to finish the project she started. They reunite when she returns to Italy and decides to stay. Matteo and Chiara, meanwhile, have a surprising first date, and before long they become a committed couple. They dream about the future and soon decide to get married, much to their friends’ amazement. Matteo and Chiara are trying to have a child when he receives an important promotion that will take him to London with his colleague Stella, with whom he has sex in a hotel, effectively cheating on Chiara. Matteo gives in and confesses the affair to his wife. Although she is already seven months pregnant, she decides to distance herself from him, hurt by what happened, but they reunite on the day their baby is born. In the second scenario Luca and Sara describe, however, the situations are reversed. This time Giulia and Matteo are the ones who get married. Giulia had become pregnant after their first encounter, and Matteo stayed by her side, supporting her throughout and giving up the publishing house’s promotion so that Giulia could accept the job offer in Lisbon. Their baby is born, and they name him Andrea. After everything Matteo has done for her, Giulia realizes she has fallen in love with him. Months pass, and she turns down an extension to her contract in Lisbon so she can return to Italy, repaying Matteo for the sacrifice he made for her. Later, Matteo has to accompany Stella to London—his colleague, to whom he had essentially given the promotion—and it is there that the two have sex. Overcome with remorse, Matteo tells Giulia the truth on Andrea’s birthday. She tells him she found the messages and already knew everything, but despite her pain, she decides to forgive him. Chiara and Dario decide almost immediately to be just friends, since Chiara’s more romantic lifestyle does not suit Dario’s freewheeling ways. But the more time they spend together, the more they realize they genuinely like each other. It all leads to a kiss in Lisbon, when they have gone to visit Giulia and Matteo, but Chiara suggests that she and Dario remain friends so as not to ruin their relationship. Dario agrees, although the decision leaves him unhappy. Back in Italy, Chiara starts dating a colleague of hers. Dario cannot bear it, and after an argument the two end their friendship, only to reunite after a dinner arranged by Chiara’s now-boyfriend, who wanted to introduce Dario to a woman. Overcome by jealousy, Chiara realizes she has fallen in love with Dario and rushes to his home. At the end of the evening, Luca and Sara’s friends discuss which version is the real one and which one would disprove the theory of soulmates.
