The story
Luka is a troubled teenager approaching adulthood in Mladenovac, a devastated industrial town outside Belgrade. He leads the local football club’s supporters alongside his best friend Flash. During an unexpected visit from a social worker, Luka discovers that his father, whom he believed had disappeared in Kosovo, is alive and has been asking about him; his mother has kept this from him. Already under pressure from family problems, a suspended sentence, and unreturned feelings for a girl, Luka lashes out and injures a local footballer. As his standing with the people around him deteriorates, a supporters’ trip to Belgrade for a protest offers him a chance to leave town and look for his father.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
On February 17, 2008, Kosovo declared independence, and the Serbian government decided to organize a large protest in Belgrade so that the citizens of Serbia could express their opposition. Luka, a troubled teenager on the brink of adulthood, grows up in Mladenovac, a devastated industrial town on the outskirts of Belgrade, where, together with his best friend Flash, he leads the supporters of the local football club. During an unannounced visit from a social worker, Luka learns that his father, whom he believed had disappeared in Kosovo, is actually alive and has been asking about him through the social services center—but that his mother has been keeping this from him. Torn between family problems, the pressure of his suspended sentence, and feelings for a girl he cannot have, Luka snaps and breaks a local club footballer's leg. As a result, he falls out of favor with the people whose investment has gone bad and who want revenge, and even his friends begin to distance themselves from him. When Luka’s supporters’ group sets off for Belgrade in an organized trip to protest Kosovo’s secession, he seizes the opportunity to escape town and set out in search of his father. While hooligans wreak havoc on the streets of Belgrade, Luka tries to summon the strength for a fateful encounter with the father who abandoned him long ago.
