Full plot (contains spoilers)
Olli, the spoiled son of the Koivumäki estate owner, decides to run away from home after his father gives him a beating for fighting with Pentti, the estate bailiff’s son. On the run, Olli meets his cousin Kaarle, who puts him up in the dilapidated Harmaala house and convinces him that Pentti died in the fight. Kaarle decides to get rid of Olli so he can claim the inheritance the estate owner bequeathed to Olli in his will. He sends Olli to Stockholm to work for the crooked shoemaker Simolin. Simolin treats Olli badly. Olli befriends a boy named Ränni-Pelle and escapes with him by ship back to Finland. In Turku, Olli works as an apprentice to the shoemaker Jokela. Simolin, who has arrived in Finland, frames Olli for theft, and Olli is sent to a reform school. Ränni-Pelle, back from the sea, helps Olli escape again, and while fleeing, Olli decides to make one last visit home. By then, his parents already believe Olli is dead. Pentti is alive too, and Kaarle’s scheming is thus exposed.
