The story
Basti, a 37-year-old free spirit and rickshaw driver in Munich, is surprised when 17-year-old Dina arrives from Bitterfeld, claims he is her father, and introduces him to her baby, Paul. She demands his attention and €15,000 in back child support, giving him two days to find the money. Basti already shares his childhood home with his sister and her teenage twins, and feels unable to manage more upheaval. When neither his father, his father’s partner, nor his strict sister can help, Dina and Paul remain in Munich. Basti’s effort to obtain financial support from the youth welfare office fails, leaving him to find another way to cope with this sudden family responsibility.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
One day, 17-year-old Dina from Bitterfeld unexpectedly turns up at the front door of 37-year-old Munich free spirit and rickshaw driver Basti, and convincingly claims to be his daughter. What’s more, she introduces him to her baby, Paul, and demands not only the attention he has failed to give her for years, but also €15,000 in back child support. Basti lives in his childhood home with his sister and her teenage twins, and already feels more than stretched. If he can’t come up with the money within two days—a demand made by Dina’s mother—Dina will stay with him even longer, and he can’t handle any more upheaval. But neither his newly lovestruck father, Lambert, Lambert’s Greek lover Nektarios, nor Basti’s strict sister Thea can help him find a cash injection. So Dina and her baby remain in Munich for the time being, turning Basti’s bachelor life upside down. His attempt to get financial support from the youth welfare office fails. Instead, Basti manages to get Paul’s father’s phone number. Dina had denied that he was the father, but the young man sounds very happy on the phone when he learns that he has become a father. He immediately gets on his moped and rides from Bitterfeld to Munich. Until he arrives, though, Basti has to look after Paul, since Dina would rather explore Munich’s nightlife. Giving Paul a bottle goes fairly well, but when the baby cries nonstop and Basti can’t think of anything else to soothe him, he is at the end of his tether. At last, he thinks to change Paul’s diaper, and the baby is instantly content and quiet. When Paul’s father arrives the next day, Basti actually wants to send him straight back, because Dina has made it very clear that she doesn’t want to see him. Basti tries to convince his daughter that she shouldn’t deprive her child of his father. After all, he would be happy to have met her and to have her with him now—especially since he has meanwhile become infertile and can no longer have children. Thea also thinks her brother has changed for the better and has developed a sense of family. But after Basti gets in touch with Dina’s mother, he learns that he isn’t Dina’s father at all. It offers him little comfort that she never demanded child support from him, as his daughter had claimed, because that was just a trick Dina and her friend had come up with. Dina, too, is disappointed when her mother admits that Basti isn’t her father. Even so, she wants Basti to remain Paul’s grandpa. Then, when his musician friends serenade him, he is once again at peace with himself and the world. Dina returns to Bitterfeld with Paul, goes back to school, and now regularly sends Basti videos of herself and Paul. A few months later, Debbie, Basti’s most recent girlfriend, comes to see him and is clearly pregnant. Basti is taken aback, but pleased all the same when she suggests that he might be the father. He promises her that if she thinks he’s the father, then he wants to be. Later, a photograph shows Basti together with Debbie and a dark-skinned baby.
