The story

As World War I draws toward an end unknown to those living through it, grape pickers work at the Castelviel estate in southern France. Among them are Father Larcher and his daughters, Marthe and Marie, refugees driven from their northern homes by the war. Pierre Bertin, a soldier on convalescent leave, is also there. Their already difficult circumstances are unsettled by Wilfried and Fritz, two escaped German prisoners who pose as Belgians and threaten the peace of the hard-hit family.
