Full plot (contains spoilers)

The two friends David and Benno, from the East German town of Aschleben (fictional), fall in love with Anna, but she prefers the well-groomed Benno. Even so, the three openly live out a friendship among themselves. They all have dreams that remain out of reach, though for different reasons. David wants to become a photographer, but when his father suffers a serious accident, David has to look after him. Benno fulfills his dream and opens a business selling American cars, but goes for months without selling a single vehicle. Anna wants to become an actress and completes acting training in Berlin, but gets no engagements and dubs trashy television series.
