After losing every memory of her personal life, a married woman must navigate a world in which even her husband feels like a stranger.

The story

Lena Ferben has been married to Tore for many years when an undiagnosed brain inflammation causes retrograde amnesia. She retains speech and factual knowledge but loses her autobiographical memories, leaving her unable to recognize her husband, friends, or even her mother. The people around her try to explain her former life through descriptions, videos, and the diary and notebook she kept. Yet Lena no longer shares some of her old social instincts, and her actions repeatedly surprise or offend those who expect her to behave as she once did. As she tries to make sense of herself, the gap between the woman she was and the person she is now begins to strain her relationships.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Lena Ferben, who has been married to her husband Tore for many years, suddenly suffers from retrograde amnesia, as the doctors describe her condition. The cause is an undiagnosed inflammation of the brain. As a result, Lena has lost her autobiographical memory. She can still speak and retains factual knowledge, but all memories of her life so far have been erased. Her husband and friends suddenly seem like strangers to her. She can no longer remember even her mother—not even what she looks like. Others have to describe Lena’s former life to her or show it to her in videos, or she reads about it in the diary and notebook she kept before. But she is also no longer familiar with some social and interpersonal conventions, so her actions offend others several times. For example, she is no longer afraid of heights and follows her husband high up into Cologne Cathedral. Afterward, she approaches an elderly woman in a nursing home, believing her to be her mother. Later, she spontaneously attends a church service and meets a journalist there, with whom she then has a sexual relationship. At dinner with friends, she chatters childishly about her diary, which leads to an argument. After some time, she learns to imitate the old Lena almost perfectly and even gives a reading. Her husband, however, no longer wants to continue; he cannot bear this state of affairs any longer. Nevertheless, they have sex once more.
