Believing the four girls to be quadruplets, Mayor Leopold Scherzinger names a wine after them and makes them central to tourism advertising and entertaining guests, bringing prosperity to the village. Years later, as the girls grow into young women, the mayor worries that they may marry and leave, setting off a panicky, amusing farce.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In the small, dreamy village of Weineck in the Wachau, the innkeeper’s daughter Maria Thaller and the kitchen helper Rosina give birth to two pairs of twins on the same day. Believing them to be quadruplets, Mayor Leopold Scherzinger names a wine after them, involves them extensively in tourism advertising and entertaining guests, and thus brings prosperity to the village. When the four girls grow up, the mayor fears that the young women might marry and move away. A panicky, amusing farce ensues. In the end, there is a fourfold wedding celebration—or, more precisely, a fivefold one, since the parents of one of the pairs of twins also get married.
